MGF and Save the Children Cox Bazaar, Bangladesh Project – Jahanara Miah conducts capacity and capability building workshops for researchers

MGF consultant Jahanara Miah delivered 2 days Research capacity strengthening workshop with Andrew Clarke (Senior Health Advisor – Save the Children) in Cox Bazaar in Bangladesh on the 4th and 5th of December. A total of 25 participants, both online and in person, attended the workshop, consisting of a Health Advisor, Senior Program Manager (Nutrition), Senior Officer – Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Advisor MHPSS, Coordinator MHPSS, Senior Manager (Research, Learning and Knowledge), Manager (Monitoring and Evaluation Team), Technical Specialist (Case Management), Program Manager and Safeguarding Manager.

The 2 days workshop training supports the research team involved in implementing and delivering the Randomised Controlled Trial to evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a group-based integrated parenting intervention to improve maternal mental health and child well-being outcomes in Rohingya communities in the Cox Bazar camps.

Maternal and Child Health and Wellbeing, Bangladesh

MGF consultant Jahanara Miah met with Dr Helal Uddin Ahmed, (Associate Professor of Child Adolescent and Family Psychiatry at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Dhaka, Bangladesh), and with Professor Mashreky (Director of Non-communicable Diseases & Mental Health, Centre for Injury Prevention and Research Bangladesh (CIPRB)), to discuss possible funding opportunities for investment in maternal mental health and the need to increase research capacity and capability building in Bangladesh.

Interactive online training on an Integrated Parenting Intervention called Learning Through Play Plus Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (LTP Plus)

Interactive online training on an Integrated Parenting Intervention called Learning Through Play Plus Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (LTP Plus) was delivered to the Save the Children Bangladesh team (13th March to 16th March 2023) by master trainers (Dr Tayyeba Kiran and Rabia Fahad) from Pakistan Institute of Living and Learning (PILL). The training was attended by a multidisciplinary team of professionals including clinical psychologists, mental health support workers, social workers, program managers etc. Training was comprised of a comprehensive presentation on 10 group sessions of LTP, role play, discussion sessions, question answer sessions and pre and post assessments.

Ruma Khondaker Senior Specialist-MHPSS (Mental Health and Psychosocial Support for Save the Children in Bangladesh, Cox’s Bazar

Ruma Khondaker has been practising psychotherapeutic approaches as a clinical psychologist since 2003. She has specialized experiences on community based national MHPSS program related to vulnerable people such as Rohingya refugees. She is trained on CBT therapy along with vast experiences, ToT on IASC MHPSS guideline and PFA, systemic family therapy (SFT), psychodrama, DBT, mhGAP, EFT, etc. She has been working individually on MHPSS program design and capacity building initiative design and implementation including an innovative way of implementation as per situational need and resources. She has expanded experiences on working cooperatively with cross-sectors, specially-Health, Nutrition, Education, Child Protection, Case Management, DRR, FSL, WASH etc. Ruma Khondaker is highly committed and interested to make the best adaptation of mainstreaming therapeutic techniques for community people who are in vulnerable conditions.
